Travel from Kona to Volcano and learn about life in Hawaii, the different agriculture zones, small villages and what makes them hum, the magnificent Black Sand Beach and ‘talk story’ on your 3 hour drive to volcano. 


Then the Volcano adventure begins. We start at the visitors center to look at a 3d map to get the scope of the island hand see the 5 volcanos that make up the Island of Hawaii.  Feel the heat of madam Pele (Goddess of Volcano) in the Steam Vents. Stand at the edge of Halema’uma’u crater, and say a special prayer, make an offering as the Hawaiian’s did eras before us and even today.

At Jaggar Museum you can see fascinating exhibits about the volcano and how important it is to Hawaiian Culture. The scientific exhibits of the museum will also create a good understanding of the volcano.

After super, we will once again stand at the edge of Halema’uma’u crater and  to look for the glow inside. Volcanoes are unpredictable, so you never know when you will see some action.

Then safely drive back to Kona. An amazing journey to a Volcano and Back

Stop at Coffee Shack: learn about Hawaiian Kapu History, Coffee Farms & Kona Coffee

Stop at scenic overlook just past Ocean View for lava ‘look see.’

Stop in Na’alehu – Choose sandwiches

This is a small town where we will buy lunch for a picnic at a black sand beach a few miles down the road. Or we can choose to eat at a little local café.

Arrive: ~1:00 pm – Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

  1. See Natural History movie of the Volcano

  2. Sulfur banks and steam vents

  3. Observe caldera

  4. Halema’uma’u Crater to make offering

  5. Jaggar Museum to observe the science of Volcano.

Dinner at Volcano Village

Drive into Volcano Park to the lava viewing, if the flow/crater glow is visible.

For comfort on your journey wear comfortable outdoor active clothes that can be layered. It will be warm until we reach the volcano. At volcano the weather varies; cool and misty day or a warm sunny day. You will want long pants and proper walking shoes, a jacket or sweater.
