And when they suffered the afflictions of northern armies in their backyards and growing numbers of war dead, they strengthened and consoled themselves with the knowledge that they were doing God’s work on earth. The Civil War created a coinage shortage, so the first official paper currency of the United States entered circulation. We argue that the theological war thesis originated in texts by theologians who between them contended that the Confederacy comprised an orthodox Christian nation, at times intertwining this religious viewpoint with, amongst other things, defences of slavery, denunciations of public education and mass schooling, and proposals to maintain a hierarchical and unequal society.

Dixie found itself in Danang. “We are fighting and dying in a war that is not very popular in the first place,” Lieutenant Eddie Kitchen, a 33-year-old African-American stationed in Vietnam, wrote his mother in Chicago in late February 1968, “and we still have some people who are still fighting the Civil War.” Kitchen, who had been in the military since 1955, reported a rapid proliferation of Confederate flags, mounted on jeeps and flying over some bases. “The Negroes here are afraid and cannot do anything,” Kitchen added.

Texas declared secession from the United States the first of February of 1861, and joined the Confederacy a month and a day later. Immediately, the prices of substitutes rose far above the $300 to which the commutation clause had held them. The Confederate victory in the Battle of Chancellorsville (May 2-3, 1863), again gave General Lee the initiative, and again he chose to invade the North. Over the following few weeks, public sentiment for holding the fort strengthened, and by the end of March, a majority of the cabinet came to the same position.

It was a reconstructed United States ship, the Merrimack (renamed the Virginia). General Scott’s Anaconda Plan was a very passive way of defeating the Confederacy. The Army of Northern Virginia battle flag was usually square, of various sizes for the different branches of the service: 48 inches square for the infantry, 36 inches for the artillery, and 30 inches for the cavalry. That officer, knowing that the president expected results, led the North’s army to the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg hoping to get around the Lee forces’ right flank.

He returned to the ranks as a private until April 2, 1864. Two cannon cast by the above are known to survive. The philatelic market regards as far more valuable the stamps placed on envelopes that were actually used during the war. The impact of their journey was more immediate in California. Note in the record below, one record used initials, but the other record used first name and middle initial. The Confederates got there first, and by afternoon had driven the Union troops south of town, where they rallied into defensive positions on Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill.
